Best New Car Purchase Deals
You’ve probably seen the ads – Happy Honda Days, Toyotathon, the Lexus December to Remember – and asked yourself “Is December a good time to get a deal on a new car?” The answer is a resounding yes. The end of the year is a great time to buy a new car.
Not only are dealers and automakers trying to clear the last of the 2018 models off the lots, but they're also trying to hit their month-, quarter-, and year-end sales goals. To do that, automakers are offering great new car deals, and dealers are more likely to give you a great price.
There are some excellent cash back offers this month, including up to $7,750 off the price of a 2018 Volvo V90 (pictured above) and $4,750 cash back on a 2018 GMC Terrain Denali. Not all of the deals are on 2018 models. There's a $3,000 cash back deal on the 2019 Infiniti QX60.
With interest rates continuing to rise, the number of zero percent financing deals is off sharply this month, though they do exist if you know where to find them. Both Ford and Ram are offering six-year, zero percent deals on their full-size pickups this December. As we’ve seen for much of the year, there’s a zero percent deal available on the winter-ready 2019 Subaru Outback.
Some deals are limited to specific regions, trim levels, or a particular percentage of dealer stock. Save yourself some time before you head to the dealership by checking with an online sales consultant or using our Best Price Program to ensure you’re considering the best deal you can get. All of the car deals illustrated in this article expire on January 2, 2019.
1. Chevrolet Tahoe
Purchase Deal: Up to $3,750 cash back
Buyers looking for a large SUV can get up to $3,750 cash back when they purchase a 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe. Chevy didn’t make any significant changes for 2019, so there’s little downside to buying the 2018 model. The Tahoe was a finalist for our 2018 Best Large SUV for Families award.
The 2018 Tahoe has an above-average predicted reliability score, an interior that would be at home in a luxury car, and loads of standard infotainment and connectivity tech. Buyers have a choice of either a 355-horsepower V8 or a 420-horsepower V8. Properly equipped, the Tahoe can tow up to 8,600 pounds.
The Tahoe can’t fit as much cargo in the back as some rival vehicles, and its third row is a bit tight. If you need more cargo and passenger room, you should consider the 2018 Chevrolet Suburban, a stretched version of the Tahoe that has similar purchase incentives this month.
2. 2019 Subaru Outback
Purchase Deal: 0% financing for a limited term
Look at roads in states that have lots of snow and ice and you’re likely to see large numbers of Subaru Outbacks. Every 2019 Subaru Outback comes standard with all-wheel drive, has class-leading cargo capacity, and offers plentiful passenger space – making them perfect for winter family excursions.
For 2019, each Outback also includes Subaru’s EyeSight suite of advanced safety and driver assistance features, including automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keeping assist.
Subaru is one of a dwindling number of manufacturers to offer zero percent financing deals, so you probably want to grab one while you still can.
3. Ford F-150
The Ford F-150 has been the most popular vehicle in America for decades. Ford is defending their sales crown with a number of generous incentives on the 2018 Ford F-150 this December, including a six-year, zero percent financing deal. The deal can save you thousands of dollars in interest payments.
The current generation of the pickup has held a position near the top of our ranking of full-size trucks, though for 2019 it is facing redesigned competitors from Ram, Chevrolet, and GMC. Ford made few changes to the F-150 for 2019, so you won’t have to give up anything if you buy a 2018 model.
Ford makes hundreds of configurations of the F-150, so they likely have a truck that fits your needs. They offer an array of powerful engines, with excellent towing and hauling capacity from trucks with V8 and turbocharged V6 powerplants. Though their cabins aren’t as upscale as those of some rival trucks, they’re plenty roomy and comfortable enough for long stints behind the wheel.
4. GMC Terrain Denali
In the world of GMC, the name Denali is only applied to vehicles with the most features and the most luxurious interiors. The 2018 GMC Terrain Denali is the smallest vehicle in their lineup to get the Denali badge, and this December you can buy one with a $4,750 cash back incentive.
The Terrain Denali comes with a 252-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a top-of-the-line infotainment system with navigation, and a powerful Bose audio system. Unlike some rivals, however, advanced safety and driver assistance features don’t come standard. You have to buy an option package to get automatic emergency braking and other safety technology.
When it comes to predicted reliability, the GMC Terrain shines with a score that’s above average. It was a finalist for our 2018 Best Compact SUV for Families award.
5. 2019 Toyota Camry
Purchase Deal: 0% financing for 36 months plus $1,000 bonus cash
In some parts of the country, Toyota is offering a three-year, zero percent financing deal with $1,000 bonus cash on the 2019 Toyota Camry. Other regions have below-market-rate and longer-term financing deals available. The offers are good until January 2, 2019.
The Camry holds the top spot in our ranking of midsize cars. Not only is it comfortable, easy to drive, and fuel efficient, it also comes loaded with standard safety technology and driver assistance features. Every Camry is equipped with automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and more. For 2019, the Camry is one of a growing number of Toyota products to support Apple CarPlay. Support for Android Auto is not yet available.
Other than the smartphone support, the 2019 Camry is virtually identical to the 2018 model. You can save some cash if you find a 2018 Toyota Camry on a dealer’s lot, as Toyota is offering even more generous offers on the 2018 than they are on the 2019, including up to $2,000 cash back in some areas.
6. Hyundai Kona
Hyundai’s entry in the burgeoning subcompact SUV market debuted in 2018. Few changes were made for the 2019 model year. That makes the $2,000 cash back offer on the 2018 Hyundai Kona a great deal, though if you opt for a 2019 Kona you can still get up to $1,250 back.
The Kona is one of the more agile competitors in the segment, with a fun-to-drive attitude that’s further enhanced if you opt for the available turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Unlike some class rivals, the Kona is available with either front- or all-wheel drive. It’s a good long-term investment, as it has both an above-average predicted reliability score and an excellent warranty that covers its powertrain for 10 years or 100,000 miles.
Though the Kona has a smaller cargo area than many class rivals when all of the seats are folded, it has more than most behind the rear seat when it is up.
7. 2019 Infiniti QX60
Purchase Deal: $3,000 cash back
Infiniti upgraded the QX60 crossover for 2019, adding automatic emergency braking and blind spot monitoring to its standard feature list. Its place as one of the least expensive competitors in the luxury midsize segment is enhanced by this month’s $3,000 cash back deal.
Though it has a 295-horsepower V6 under the hood, the continuously variable transmission in the 2019 Infiniti QX60 prevents it from fully exploiting its power potential. Still, it makes a solid daily driver, with a smooth ride and a comfortable interior. As in many 3-row luxury SUVs, the QX60’s back row is best suited for kids. Standard interior features include tri-zone automatic climate control, a moonroof, and an 8-inch display screen for the easy-to-use Infiniti InTouch infotainment system.
In our ranking of luxury midsize SUVs, the QX60 holds a spot about three-quarters of the way down the list. The very similar 2018 model was a finalist for our 2018 Best Luxury 3-Row SUV for the Money award.
8. 2018 Mazda MX-5 Miata
One strategy for car buying is to shop when nobody else is looking at the car you want. For instance, buying a 2018 Mazda MX-5 Miata in December. Mazda is offering a 1.9 percent deal on the Miata for six years. That’s about three percent below the market rate.
The fourth-generation Miata is as pure a sports car as you'll find on the market today. While the two-seat roadster doesn't have a massive engine, it has excellent balance and a well-designed suspension setup that leads to spectacular handling. It is available with an automatic transmission, but most purists will tell you that the six-speed manual is the way to go. The Miata is available with a simple-to-operate convertible soft top or power-operated convertible hardtop.
Mazda gave the 2019 Mazda MX-5 Miata a dose of increased power. If you’re willing to pay the higher price of the new model, you can take advantage of a 2.9 percent financing deal for six years, which is still below the market rate.
9. Nissan Murano
Purchase Deal: 0% financing for 60 months plus $2,000 bonus cash
A refreshed Nissan Murano will soon hit the streets for 2019. In order to make space on dealer lots for the new model, there are some great purchase incentives on the 2018 Nissan Murano. Nissan is offering a zero percent financing deal for five years, plus $2,000 bonus cash.
In some parts of the country, you can opt for as much as $4,500 cash back instead of the zero percent financing.
The 2018 Murano holds a spot near the middle of the pack in our ranking of midsize SUVs. It was a finalist for both our 2018 Best 2-Row SUV for the Money and Best 2-Row SUV for Families awards. It features a top-notch cabin design with excellent seat comfort. The Murano includes automatic emergency braking as a standard feature.
10. Volvo V90
Purchase Deal: Up to $7,750 cash back
In what is starting to seem like a tradition, Volvo continues to offer a massive cash back deal on the 2018 Volvo V90 and V90 Cross Country wagons. If you currently own a Volvo or Saab vehicle, you’ll get $7,750 back. Other buyers are eligible for $6,750 cash back.
In our ranking of wagons, the new-for-2018 V90 holds a spot just below the segment leaders. Though it has less cargo room than rivals – and a higher base price – the V90 has an impressive cabin design with high-quality materials. A central feature is the car’s vertically oriented Sensus infotainment system touch screen. And, instead of a traditional instrument panel, the V90 includes a 12.3-inch customizable display for the driver.
The standard engine in the wagon is a 250-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine. You can upgrade to a 316-horsepower four-cylinder that is both turbocharged and supercharged.
11. Ram 1500
Purchase Deal: 0% financing for 72 months
In Ram’s drive to bring new customers to the brand, there’s an excellent six-year, zero percent deal this month on the freshly redesigned 2019 Ram 1500. Depending on where you live, you can also opt for a cash back offer or a combination of cash and zero percent financing.
The Ram holds the top spot in our ranking of full-size pickup trucks.
Compared to its formidable class rivals, the redesigned Ram features excellent ride quality. That’s due to its sophisticated suspension setup, which can be further enhanced when you choose the adjustable air suspension system. The Ram’s cab choices are all spacious and comfortable, with some trims downright luxurious. There’s even room for reclining seats in some models of the Ram 1500 crew cab. Properly equipped, the truck can tow up to 12,750 pounds.
12. Buick Encore
Purchase Deal: 20% below MSRP when you finance through GM Financial
This December, Buick is offering percent-off deals on many of the vehicles in its lineup. On the 2018 Buick Encore, which has a base price of $22,990, you’ll save at least $4,598 off sticker price when you finance through GM Financial. You can save even more on upper-trim models.
The Encore has a higher base price than most rivals, but it comes better equipped than most others in the class. Standard features include an 8-inch touch-screen infotainment system with support for a 4G LTE data connection, a Wi-Fi hot spot, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay.
Its small size and nimble handling make the Encore an excellent urban adventurer, with a flexible interior that allows the crossover to swallow many shapes and sizes of cargo. The Encore's predicted reliability score is well above average.
